Light entering your eyes is one of the strongest signals your brain uses to decide whether it's time to be awake or asleep. Blue light from phones, tablets and televisions reduces the release of melatonin, the hormone that helps prepare your body for sleep. At the same time, emails, social media and news feeds keep your brain mentally engaged, making it harder to transition into a restful state.

The result is that you can feel physically tired but remain mentally alert, taking longer to fall asleep or waking more easily during the night.
